Exercise Physiology for WorkCover Recovery: What to Expect in Sydney
A workplace injury can feel disorienting. Beyond the physical injury itself, there’s uncertainty about recovery, concern about returning to work, and questions about what support is available. In New South Wales, injured workers have access to WorkCover-funded exercise physiology—a structured rehabilitation pathway designed to restore function and enable safe return to work.
At Five Dock Exercise Physiology, we work with injured workers across Sydney to rebuild strength, confidence, and capacity for work demands. Here’s what you need to know about the process.
Why Exercise Physiology Is Critical for WorkCover Recovery
Workplace injuries often affect not just the injured area, but overall fitness and work capacity. Whether the injury is to the back, shoulder, knee, or another site, recovery requires more than pain relief. It requires systematic restoration of strength, endurance, mobility, and the confidence to perform work-specific tasks.
Exercise physiologists specialise in this type of recovery. We assess your injury, understand your job demands, and design a progressive program that bridges the gap between injury and safe return to work. This reduces re-injury risk and helps you get back to full capacity.
WorkCover recognises the value of this approach, which is why funded physiotherapy and exercise physiology sessions are available to eligible injured workers.
The WorkCover Exercise Physiology Process
Initial Assessment. Your first session includes a detailed assessment of your injury, current function, pain levels, and work demands. We gather information about your job, physical requirements, and any restrictions or concerns. This creates a clear baseline.
Personalised Program Design. Based on the assessment, we design a progressive exercise program specific to your injury and work role. Rather than generic exercises, we target the movements and capacities your job requires.
Progressive Rehabilitation. You’ll attend sessions (typically 1–2 per week) where we progress your exercises as you improve. Early phases focus on pain management, mobility, and initial strengthening. Later phases build work-specific capacity—endurance, lifting, standing, or whatever your role demands.
Work Simulation. As you progress, we incorporate work-specific movements and tasks into your program. For example, if you’re a labourer returning to lifting, we’ll progressively increase lifting demands. If you do repetitive assembly work, we’ll build endurance for those movements.
Return to Work Planning. Near the end of your program, we work with you and your employer (if needed) to ensure you’re genuinely ready to resume full duties safely. We provide advice on gradual return-to-work schedules if appropriate.
What’s Covered by WorkCover?
WorkCover-funded exercise physiology is available for injured workers with approved claims. The number of sessions covered depends on your injury and treatment plan, but funding is available to support thorough rehabilitation. There’s typically no out-of-pocket cost if you’re an eligible injured worker.
To access this service, your injury must be part of an accepted WorkCover claim, and your treating doctor or physiotherapist should refer you to exercise physiology.

Timeline: When Can I Return to Work?
Recovery timelines vary significantly depending on injury severity, age, fitness level before injury, and job demands. Some workers return to modified duties within weeks; others require 3–6 months of rehabilitation for complex injuries.
Your exercise physiologist will provide realistic timeframes based on your progress and give you milestones to work toward. Transparent communication about recovery trajectory helps you plan and maintains motivation.
Benefits Beyond Work
While the goal is safe return to work, the benefits extend beyond your job. You’ll regain strength, improve cardiovascular fitness, restore mobility, and rebuild confidence in your body. Many injured workers find that completing exercise physiology rehabilitation leaves them fitter and more resilient than before injury.
Starting Your WorkCover Rehabilitation
If you’ve had a workplace injury and hold an accepted WorkCover claim, ask your doctor or physiotherapist for a referral to exercise physiology. We’ll take it from there, managing your rehabilitation and liaising with WorkCover as needed.
The goal isn’t just to get you back to work—it’s to get you back safely, confidently, and in genuinely good condition. We’re here to support that journey.
